If anyone is interested in doing this, all you have to do is paste this into textedit:

#EXTM3U

#EXT-X-STREAM-INF:PROGRAM-ID=1,BANDWIDTH=1335076,CODECS="avc1.77.31",RESOLUTION=854x480

remove the space between ht and tp (thanks kinja!), and save this file as playlist.m3u8

then, open VLC and (on mac, pc should be similar) go to preferences, show all, video, enable wallpaper mode. save and restart vlc, open playlist, and enjoy watching a live view of the earth scroll past in the background
